Duties: Building and Piloting Aircraft

The last time I tried this, I was much younger...

Log Entry: May 2004

I built and flew a couple of smaller (.049 glow-fuel size) 2-CH radio controlled model airplanes when I was 13 years old, back in 1977.  Nothing serious, just me being a kid.  I had about 12 flights total.  The one built from a kit crashed on it's third flight due to a radio (out-of-range or glitch) problem.  I also flew one just like this Cox plane many times but eventually crashed it too badly to repair again.

I haven't really touched a RC airplane in 25 years, but now I'm back at it and learning all over again. I'm basically self-taught, using the PC simulator and the electric plane as training aids.

As I re-enter the hobby, I'm amazed by the affordable new multi-channel FM radios, .46-.91 glow fuel engines, and the "quick-build" ARF and RTF kits that are available today.

After pursuing hobbies like model rockets, robotics, and computers ... I consider myself more of model builder/ designer/controller ... than a pilot. I guess that's going to have to change :-)

General Notes:

7/2004 - Flew my first ever .46 sized airplane. First glow fuel powered flight in 25 years.

5/2005 - Flew the AirCore twice today (first "gas" flights this season). Also flew the Ventura 5 times this month and some in April.

11/2005 - After flying for about a year at un-sanctioned fields, I finally joined the AMA. Currently looking for the best local club to join.

1/2006 - It's official ... I'm now also a member of ARCS.

Progress Updates:

(7/2005) I have flown about 20 flights on the .46 size gas powered planes, and about 25 flights on the electric Ventura. Countless simulator hours on the PC.

(8/2006) In 2006 alone, I flew over 150 flights on my .46 sized aircraft (NexStar and Four Star) and can perform most basic aerobatic maneuvers with the planes. Currently flying my (larger, faster, more aerobatic, etc.) Edge 540 with success.
